Dr Stephen Fyson, BA Hons, MHPEd, DipCS (post-grad), PhD (Psychology), MACE, MCAPS
Dr Stephen Fyson is a psychologist and educator who has been involved with and committed to Christian education for over thirty years. He was the past Principal of Southland College (a Christian Teacher Training Institute) and Director of Education for Morling College in Sydney (the Baptist Theological College for NSW and the ACT). As well as other leadership roles, Stephen headed up a Christian Special Needs School (St Philip’s Christian School DALE Newcastle). He was the inaugural Principal Consultant at The Excellence Centre (based at Pacific Hills Christian School) and is also Special Projects Officer for the St Philip’s Christian group of schools based throughout the Hunter region. He has assisted schools in growing in their Christian maturity in two overlapping areas - their patterns of teaching and learning, and the concomitant organisational processes to enable this growth in Christian teaching practice. Undertaking processes for deepening understanding of Biblical principles with reference to teaching and learning has been a cornerstone of Stephen's work with school leaders and teachers. This has been across diverse areas such as core classroom routines, managing challenging behaviours, pastoral care, discipline that is just and merciful, and designing and developing Christian curriculum programs. The broader structural development scope has encompassed work in understanding policy and procedure development and implementation, staff development, compliance routines (that do not become the master of the educational endeavour), and yearly planning and management cycles. He delights in helping schools be more Christian, so that they stay Christian.
Stephen is a social researcher by trade and a teacher at heart. As a Christian social scientist, he has combined these interests and passions in his work with young people for almost 40 years. He has worked in welfare, health and education, and has been involved in establishing Christian Psychology and Community Psychology within the Australian Psychological Society.
